Paramapurusha Temple, Jyotirmath

Thirumangai Alvar sang ten pasurams in praise of this temple. Jyotirmath itself is one of the four cardinal mathas established by the 8th-century philosopher Adi Shankara, alongside Sringeri, Puri and Dwarka, making this one of the few Divya Desams also central to the wider Advaita monastic tradition.

The pairing of a Vaishnava Divya Desam with a seat of Adi Shankara's Advaita order is itself notable: Shankara's philosophical project is often popularly framed in opposition to devotional Vaishnavism, yet at Jyotirmath the two traditions sit side by side, with the matha's monastic authority and the temple's Narasimha worship coexisting as part of the same pilgrimage landscape.

Temple tradition holds that Adi Shankara himself established worship of Narasimha here as part of his mission to spread Vedanta across India. During the centuries when the Katyuri kings ruled the surrounding Kumaon region, the temple remained an active seat of pilgrimage in the high Himalayas.

Jyotirmath's continued relevance owes much to its winter role as Badrinarayan's seat: for roughly six months each year, when the high-altitude Badrinath Temple closes under snow, the processional deity and much of the associated ritual life relocate here, meaning Jyotirmath has functioned as far more than a seasonal outpost for centuries. It is the winter half of Badrinath's own continuous worship calendar.

Built for a high-altitude Himalayan climate, the temple's construction differs markedly from the Dravidian-style Divya Desams of the south, a plain stone shrine suited to heavy snow rather than an elaborate gopuram complex.

The temple's ritual calendar is built around the annual closing and opening of Badrinath Temple. On Basant Panchami each year, the exact dates for that year's Badrinath opening and closing are formally announced at the royal court of the erstwhile Tehri Naresh, still a ceremonial occasion of real significance to the wider Badri-Kedar pilgrimage circuit. Then, when Badrinath closes for winter (traditionally around the day of Bhai Dooj in November) priests perform a final Mahabhishekam at Badrinath and light an akhand jyot (an unbroken ceremonial lamp) before the deity, which is carried down in procession to the Narasimha temple at Jyotirmath and kept burning here throughout the winter closure, only returning to Badrinath the following spring.

When Badrinath Temple closes for winter, the deity Badrinarayan is traditionally brought down to Jyotirmath, which serves as his winter seat. Devotees visiting in the winter months should check locally whether Badrinath or Jyotirmath currently holds the processional deity.
