Deepaprakasa Perumal Temple, Kanchipuram

Thiruthanka's significance for Sri Vaishnavas rests substantially on a single figure: tradition holds that Vedanta Desika (the towering 13th–14th century philosopher, poet and one of the most influential acharyas in Sri Vaishnava history) was born in this very kshetra, at Thoppul within Kanchipuram. For devotees who follow the Vadakalai tradition in particular, this makes Thiruthanka a birthplace pilgrimage in addition to its standing as a Divya Desam in its own right, a dual significance shared by very few of the 108 temples.

Desika's own devotion to Deepaprakasa Perumal is recorded in his Saranagathi Deepika, a 59-verse Sanskrit composition expressing complete surrender (saranagati) to the deity, one of many works across Desika's extraordinarily prolific output as a poet, logician and theologian. A separate shrine to Hayagriva stands nearby, reflecting Desika's well-documented devotion to that horse-headed form of Vishnu associated with knowledge, a devotion also visible at Thiruvahindrapuram, another temple closely tied to Desika's life and work.

The temple is one of the smaller Divya Desams within Kanchipuram's dense cluster of Vishnu shrines, glorified by a single pasuram of mangalasasanam from Thirumangai Alvar. Its enduring importance owes less to scale than to its status as Vedanta Desika's traditional birthplace, a distinction that has kept it a point of pilgrimage for centuries of Sri Vaishnavas tracing the life of one of their tradition's most important philosophical figures.

The temple stands under the Sreekara Vimanam, with the Saraswati Pushkarni as its sacred tank, a name recalling the goddess of learning, fitting for a shrine so closely tied to Vedanta Desika's scholarly legacy.

Festival observances at Thiruthanka include occasions tied to Vedanta Desika's own life and legacy, alongside the standard Sri Vaishnava calendar shared across Kanchipuram's Divya Desam cluster.

Daily worship follows the customary schedule of Kanchipuram's smaller Divya Desams, with many visitors combining a visit here with the nearby Hayagriva shrine associated with Vedanta Desika.
