Chandrasaabahara Perumal Temple, Thalachangadu

The temple's name, Chandrasaabahara, literally means "remover of Chandra's curse," tying it to a specific episode in the moon-deity Chandra's mythology. Perumal here is locally called Nanmadiya Perumal, and the temple is one of the eleven Divya Desams that make up the Thirunangur cluster, a group of shrines near Nangur so closely linked in devotional practice that their festival deities are still brought together once a year for a shared celebration.

The temple is also known for a conch considered one of a kind, a distinction tied to the area's historical closeness to the Chola-era port town of Poompuhar; the region's association with conches and maritime trade is old enough to be mentioned in the Sangam-era Tamil epic Silappatikaram.

Temple tradition tells that Chandra (the moon) once performed the rajasuya sacrifice, during which his attraction to Tara, wife of Brihaspati, led Brihaspati to curse him with a wasting affliction. Tara's son Budha, born of this union, is said to have resented his father because of the circumstances of his birth. Chandra is believed to have worshipped Vishnu at this spot to be relieved of the curse, and the temple's own tank, Chandra Pushkarani, is named for this same episode.

As one of the eleven Thirunangur Divya Desams, the temple's central annual observance is bound up with the wider cluster: each year, in the Tamil month of Thai (January–February) on the new-moon day, the festival deities of all eleven Thirunangur shrines are brought together on Garuda vahanams for the Thirumangai Alvar Mangalasasana Utsavam, alongside an image of the Alvar himself, with his pasurams for each of the eleven temples recited in turn, a shared devotional event unique to this cluster among the 108 Divya Desams.

The temple is built in Dravidian style with a single-tiered gopuram, fronted by the Chandra Pushkarani tank. Its distinctive conch, noted above for its connection to the area's port-town history, is kept and shown to devotees as one of the temple's notable features.

Six daily rituals and three annual festivals are observed here, with the ten-day Vaikuntha Ekadashi in the Tamil month of Margazhi (December–January) as the most prominent of the year. As part of the Thirunangur cluster, the temple's festival deity also participates in the shared Thai Amavasya Mangalasasana Utsavam described above, when all eleven Thirunangur shrines bring their processional deities together.
