The Only Divya Desam With a Joint Perumal-Thayar Pasuram

The presiding deity is worshipped here as Amaruviappan ("the one who dwells amid cattle") a distinctive local form of Vishnu. Thirumangai Alvar is understood to have sung a substantial 45 pasurams in praise of this temple, one of the larger pasuram counts among the 108, and tradition holds this is the only Divya Desam where the verses address Perumal and Thayar (Devadiraja and Senkamalavalli) together rather than the deity alone, a distinction that sets Theranzhdur apart from every other temple on the list.

The Cattle Legend Behind Amaruviappan's Name

Temple tradition tells of Brahma once driving away a herd of cattle belonging to Krishna; Krishna created a new herd, and upon realising his mistake, Brahma apologised and asked Krishna to make this his abode. The sanctum deity is accordingly depicted surrounded by cattle, and the festival image is specifically named Amaruviappan for this reason.

A further tradition holds that the temple's vimanam was a gift from Devendra (Indra) to Garuda, Vishnu's mount, who is said to have installed it here, giving the tower its name, Garuda Vimanam, and linking the temple's architecture directly to its founding legend.

Garuda's Own Vimanam

The central shrine houses Devadiraja Perumal in standing posture, with the festival deity Amaruviappan housed beneath the Garuda Vimanam described above. The temple tank, Darsa Pushkarani, lies outside the main temple complex rather than immediately adjoining it, which is somewhat unusual among the Chola Nadu Divya Desams.

Vaikasi Brahmotsavam at Theranzhdur

The Vaikasi Brahmotsavam, held in the Tamil month of Vaikasi (May–June), is the temple's principal festival, during which the festival images of Devadiraja Perumal and Senkamalavalli are taken in procession through the streets around the temple. Thiruvonam and the wider Vaikuntha Ekadashi observance during Margazhi (December–January) are also prominently marked.
