நைமிசாரண்யம்

Naimisaranyam is glorified by Thirumangai Alvar and is counted among the Swayamvyaktha Kshetras, Divya Desams where the deity is believed to have manifested on its own rather than being installed. Beyond the Divya Desam tradition, Naimisaranyam holds an even wider place in Hindu scripture: it is traditionally revered as one of four cardinal pilgrimage sites tied to the four yugas: Naimisaranyam to Satya Yuga, Pushkar to Treta Yuga, Kurukshetra to Dwapar Yuga, and the Ganga to Kali Yuga.

Most significantly, Naimisaranyam is remembered in the Puranas as the forest where Suta Goswami, a disciple of the sage Vyasadeva, first narrated the Bhagavata Purana to an assembly of 88,000 rishis led by the sage Shaunaka. The gathering is described as a Satra-Yajna, a sacrificial rite of such duration that it is said to have continued across thousands of years, making this forest, in scriptural memory, the very place where one of Hinduism's central devotional texts was first spoken aloud.

According to temple tradition, when sages asked Brahma where they could safely perform penance, he cast a sacred wheel (chakra) into the sky and told them to settle wherever it landed. The chakra is traditionally said to have fallen here, giving the adjoining tank its name, Chakra Theertham. It was this same forest clearing, sanctified by the chakra's fall, that later became the setting for the 88,000-rishi assembly and Suta Goswami's recitation of the Bhagavata Purana, linking the site's founding legend directly to its later role as a centre of scriptural transmission.

The temple is unusual among the northern Divya Desams for combining a South Indian-style gopuram at its entrance with North Indian architectural features within, a reminder of the Naalayira Divya Prabandham's pan-Indian reach, carrying South Indian temple-building conventions into the heart of the Gangetic plain.

Purnima, the full-moon day of the Hindu lunar calendar, is the temple's most significant recurring occasion: large numbers of pilgrims arrive to bathe in the adjoining Chakra Theertham, the tank traditionally said to mark the spot where Brahma's discus fell to earth, before taking darshan at the temple.

The temple follows a split daily schedule, typically open from around 7:45 am to noon and again from 4:00 pm to 7:30 pm, closing over the afternoon hours in between; devotees should confirm current timings locally, as these can vary by season and on festival days.
