Temple tradition holds that Bhudevi's beauty, diminished by a curse from the sage Durvasa, was restored to her at this spot by Vishnu, the legend behind the temple's alternate association with beauty and grace. A separate strand of local tradition credits Indra, king of the celestial devas, with founding worship here out of gratitude to Vishnu, giving the site an additional layer of devotional history beyond the Bhudevi legend shared with several Nava Tirupathi neighbours.

The deity's name, Magara Nedungkuzhai Kathar (meaning "he of the long makara-shaped earrings") refers to a specific ornamental detail of the moolavar's iconography that is called out by name in the temple's own inscriptions, an unusually specific link between the deity's title and its physical depiction.

Thenthiruperai carries some of the most specific historical documentation in the entire Nava Tirupathi cluster: a set of stone inscriptions from the mid-10th century CE, attributed to the Pandya dynasty, individually name the temple's kodimaram (flagmast), mandapam (pillared hall), a separate external mandapam, and even the temple's ceremonial car (ther) as structures that already existed and were being maintained at that date, a level of architectural detail rarely preserved for the smaller Divya Desams.

The temple's vimanam is known as the Patthira Vimanam, and its tank is the Sukra Pushkarani, also called Sangu Theertham. A shrine to Garudazhwar, Vishnu's eagle-mount, stands near the Dwajasthambam (flagstaff), a placement noted in the temple's own inscriptions and one of the more distinctive small-shrine arrangements among the Nava Tirupathi group.

As with its Nava Tirupathi neighbours, the Garuda Sevai utsavam during the Tamil month of Vaikasi (May–June) is the temple's principal shared festival, drawing on the same cluster-wide observance that links all nine temples.
