Temple tradition holds that Ramanuja travelled here to learn the Ashtakshara mantra ("Om Namo Narayanaya") from his teacher, Thirukkoshtiyur Nambigal, who lived at this temple. Nambigal is said to have tested Ramanuja's resolve by turning him away seventeen times before finally agreeing to teach him, and even then only under a strict condition: the mantra was sacred knowledge, meant only for a select few, and revealing it to the unworthy would send the teacher himself to hell.

Ramanuja, however, climbed to the top of the temple's tower, gathered the entire village below, and recited the mantra aloud to everyone present (regardless of caste or standing) reasoning that if it could help even one more soul attain liberation, he was willing to bear the consequence of that defiance alone. When Nambigal demanded to know why his disciple had broken an explicit vow, Ramanuja is said to have replied that he was prepared to go to hell himself if it meant multitudes could be saved. Moved by this act, Nambigal bestowed on him the title "Emperumanar" ("one greater than Vishnu himself" in devotion to others) a name still used for Ramanuja across Sri Vaishnava tradition today.

This single episode is why Thirukkoshtiyur occupies an outsized place in Sri Vaishnava memory relative to its size: it marks the moment the Ashtakshara mantra passed from a closely guarded lineage teaching into something shared, in principle, with everyone.

The temple's recorded history is inseparable from this Ramanuja episode, which is treated as a foundational moment in the popularisation of Vishishtadvaita philosophy across South India. Acharyas and scholars within the tradition continue to visit specifically to see the tower associated with the recitation.

The temple is built around a five-tiered rajagopuram at its entrance, with an Ashtanga Vimana over the sanctum that is, unusually, taller than the gopuram itself, a distinctive architectural feature not seen at most other Divya Desams, where the entrance tower is typically the tallest structure.

The temple's annual Brahmotsavam is its principal festival, alongside observances that specifically commemorate Ramanuja's teaching of the Ashtakshara mantra here, occasions of particular significance to visiting Sri Vaishnava scholars and acharyas.

Daily worship follows the customary ritual schedule of Pandya Nadu Divya Desams, with the usual morning and evening sessions.
