Where several of the other ten Thirunangur forms emphasise a particular quality or episode of Vishnu (his golden radiance, his cosmic stride, his role as universal protector) this shrine's very name asserts something more direct: that the deity here is not merely representing Vaikuntham but is Vaikundanatha, its lord, present bodily in this one corner of the cluster. Temple tradition also holds that the sage Uthankar and the king Uparisarvasara worshipped Vishnu at this very spot, giving the shrine a lineage of devotion said to predate even the Thirunangur tandava legend.

For pilgrims working through all eleven Thirunangur shrines in sequence, this temple is often understood as a kind of devotional high point, a reminder that the entire cluster, however varied its individual legends, ultimately points back to the same heavenly abode.

Temple tradition holds that this is one of the eleven forms Vishnu took at Thirunangur when he intervened to calm Shiva's grief-stricken tandava after the death of Sati, the same founding narrative shared by all eleven shrines in the cluster. Here, that intervention took the specific form of Vaikundanatha, Vishnu embodying his own heavenly home for the benefit of devotees who could not otherwise reach Vaikuntham in this lifetime. Temple tradition additionally credits this site with an older layer of sanctity, naming the sage Uthankar and the king Uparisarvasara as earlier worshippers of Vishnu here, before the tandava-pacification episode is said to have unfolded.

The temple complex is contained within a single prakaram. Its mandapas carry carved depictions of Puranic scenes tied to the Thirunangur legend, and the sanctum itself is regarded by temple tradition as equal in sanctity to Vaikuntham, Vishnu's own celestial abode, a claim reflected in the shrine's name rather than in any unusual scale of construction.

This temple shares in the Thirunangur cluster's Thai-month Thirumangai Alvar Mangalasasana Utsavam, when all eleven shrines' festival deities are brought together on Garuda mounts for a combined celebration.

Daily worship at Thirunangur-cluster temples such as this one customarily follows a four-fold rhythm (an early Ushathkalam, a mid-morning Kalasanthi, an evening Sayarakshai, and a closing Ardha Jamam) though exact timings and the number of daily poojas can vary by temple and should be confirmed locally. Darshan of Vaikundanatha here is popularly regarded by devotees as equivalent, in devotional terms, to a glimpse of Vaikuntham itself.
