The Only Other Divya Desam With Srirangam's Reclining Posture

The name Krupasamudra means "ocean of mercy", reflecting the temple's association with sages seeking liberation. Thirumangai Alvar sang ten pasurams here, part of his wider circuit of the Chola Nadu coast, in praise of a moolavar known locally as Arulmaakadal Amudham (Sala Sayana Perumal), while the festival deity carries the separate name Krupasamudra Perumal.

The temple's most distinctive feature is its posture: Perumal reclines on Adisesha facing south, the same orientation as Ranganatha at Srirangam, making Thirusirupuliyur traditionally counted as the only other Divya Desam where the Lord takes this specific south-facing reclining form. It is also said to be the only Divya Desam with a separate shrine dedicated to Adisesha himself, rather than the serpent appearing only as Perumal's couch.

Two Sages Who Lost Their Way to Srirangam

Temple tradition holds that the sages Vyaghrapada and Patanjali, travelling in search of Srirangam, lost their way southward because of poor eyesight and arrived here instead, where they prayed to Vishnu to grant them the moksha they sought from Srirangam. Vishnu is also said to have appeared here for the sage Vyasa.

Because the temple's reclining, south-facing form so closely echoes Ranganatha at Srirangam, local tradition treats a visit here as carrying something of the same significance for devotees unable to make the longer journey to Srirangam itself, reinforcing Thirusirupuliyur's place as a Chola Nadu waypoint temple in its own right rather than a mere echo of the larger shrine.

A Separate Shrine for Adisesha

The sanctum is built under the Nandiyavardhana Vimanam, with Perumal reclining on Adisesha in the south-facing sayana posture described above. The temple maintains two sacred tanks, Tiruvananda Theertham and Manasa Theertham, and (reflecting the temple's distinctive serpent association) a separate shrine dedicated to Adisesha stands within the complex, a feature not repeated at any other Divya Desam.

A Full Calendar From Chithirai to Navaratri

The Tamil New Year (Chithirai) and the Vaikasi Brahmotsavam in May–June are among the temple's principal observances. Aadi Perukku, Aadi Pooram and Jyeshtabhishekam are marked in July–August, followed by Gokulashtami in August–September and the Navaratri Pavithra Utsavam in September–October, giving the temple a fuller festival calendar across the year than many of its smaller Chola Nadu neighbours.
