Temple tradition holds this as the site where Narasimha, Vishnu's man-lion form, emerged from a stone pillar to protect his young devotee Prahlada and destroy the demon king Hiranyakashipu (Prahlada's own father) in one of the most celebrated episodes in all of Vaishnava tradition. The temple's very name honours this: Prahlada Varada, "the one who granted boons to Prahlada."

Ahobilam's nine forms are each tied to a specific moment or mood of that same Narasimha story rather than nine unrelated deities: among them, Yogananda Narasimha is worshipped in a seated, yogic posture at the spot traditionally said to be where Narasimha, his fury spent, calmly taught Prahlada the practice of yoga; Malola Narasimha, seated with Lakshmi on his lap, represents the god at peace after the battle, and is the specific form carried in procession by the Ahobila Math's pontiffs to this day.

The site is traditionally associated with the Ugra Stambha, a rock formation on the hillside said to mark where Hiranyakashipu struck a pillar in anger, daring his son's god to appear from it, and where Narasimha then tore through the stone in answer. Nearby, the Rakta Kundam ("pool of blood") is traditionally described as where Narasimha washed his hands after the battle.

Ahobilam's importance to Sri Vaishnavism extends well beyond the pilgrimage itself: in 1398, the Ahobila Math, one of the tradition's most important monastic institutions, was founded here, after Narasimha is traditionally said to have appeared in the form of a wandering ascetic and personally initiated a young disciple, Kidambi Srinivasacharya, as its first pontiff under the monastic name Adivan Satakopa Jeeyar. The math's succession of Jeeyars, based at Ahobilam, has continued in an unbroken line ever since, making this Divya Desam a living seat of religious authority and not only a pilgrimage destination.

The complex spans both the Upper Ahobilam hill shrines and Lower Ahobilam, requiring a genuine trek on foot or by a hill path to visit several of the nine Narasimha forms, which are scattered across the forested Nallamala range rather than gathered in one building.

The temple's annual Brahmotsavam and festivals connected to the Prahlada-Hiranyakashipu legend are its principal observances, alongside events tied to the Ahobila Math's own religious calendar.

Visiting all nine Nava Narasimha shrines involves considerable trekking across genuinely forested hill terrain; devotees typically plan a full day or more, should check trail and weather conditions seasonally, and are advised to be alert for wildlife given the surrounding forest reserve.
