The Only Thirunangur Shrine With Two Consorts

Along with the other ten Thirunangur temples, tradition holds that Thirumangai Alvar sang mangalasasanam at all eleven, describing them as the eleven forms Vishnu assumed to pacify Shiva's cosmic dance (tandava). This particular shrine is distinctive even within that cluster: Perumal is worshipped here as Gopala Krishna alongside both Rukmini and Satyabhama together as consorts, rather than a single Thayar, a rare double-consort arrangement among the 108 Divya Desams, reflecting the temple's specifically Krishna-centred (rather than Rama- or Narayana-centred) identity.

The Parijatha Tree Krishna Planted for Satyabhama

Temple tradition associates the site with Krishna and Satyabhama choosing this location for a garden resembling Indra's celestial Nandanavana, and with an episode of Krishna saving an elephant nearby. The best-known local legend, however, concerns the Parijatha tree: Satyabhama is said to have expressed a wish for the celestial Parijatha flower, prompting Krishna to fetch the tree itself and plant it here for her, giving the temple's Krishna-Satyabhama devotional identity its most distinctive story.

As one of the eleven Thirunangur Divya Desams, the temple shares in the cluster's broader history of continuous glorification since the Alvars' time, with all eleven shrines traditionally treated as a single connected sacred geography rather than eleven unrelated temples that merely happen to sit close together.

The Swayambhu Vimanam and Thatamalar Poikai

The shrine is built in Dravidian style with a small ekatala vesara vimanam known as Swayambhu Vimanam, set low on the bhumi tier consistent with the modest scale of several Thirunangur shrines. The temple tank is named Thatamalar Poikai.

Gokulashtami and the Shared Thirunangur Utsavam

The Thirunangur cluster is best known for its combined Vaikunta Ekadashi season festivities, when all eleven temples' processional deities are traditionally brought together during the Thai Amavasya Mangalasasana Utsavam. This temple's own Krishna-Satyabhama identity also gives its local calendar a Krishna Jayanthi (Gokulashtami) observance not shared by every Thirunangur shrine.

அடிக்கடி கேட்கப்படும் கேள்விகள்

Can I visit all 11 Thirunangur temples in one day?

Yes, the eleven temples sit within a small radius and are traditionally visited together in a single day, especially during the Ekadashi season. See the dedicated Thirunangur route page for a suggested order.

What are the temple timings?

Typically 06:00–12:00 and 16:00–20:30; the eleven Thirunangur temples often keep aligned schedules, especially during the Vaikunta Ekadashi season. Verify locally before travelling.

Is there a dress code?

Most Sri Vaishnava temples expect traditional attire: dhoti/veshti for men and saree or salwar for women is customary. Dress codes vary by temple and can change, so it is worth checking locally or with the temple administration before visiting.

Which other Divya Desam can I combine with this visit?

Thiruarimeya Vinnagaram, about 0.1 km away, is the closest and is commonly combined with a visit here.

What is the best time to visit?

The Vaikunta Ekadashi season (Tamil month of Margazhi, December–January) is when the Thirunangur cluster is most active, with combined processions across all eleven temples.

Is darshan free or ticketed?

Darshan arrangements and any special ticket options can change over time. Contact the temple or check official sources for current details before travelling.
